SOF Week

Every May, downtown Tampa transforms into a hub of tactical expertise, international collaboration, and military innovation — and 2025 is no exception. SOF Week, short for Special Operations Forces Week, is back and bigger than ever, running from May 5–8 at the Tampa Convention Center. If you’ve ever wanted a glimpse into the world of elite military operations and the cutting-edge tech behind them, this is the event to watch.

What Is SOF Week?

SOF Week is a joint effort by U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the Global SOF Foundation. It’s not just another defense trade show — it’s a rare, full-spectrum gathering of military leaders, operators, defense industry experts, innovators, and foreign partners, all focused on one mission: strengthening global security through special operations.

With over 19,000 attendees expected from 60+ countries, it’s a unique mix of suit-and-tie briefings, boots-on-the-ground demonstrations, and everything in between.

Why It Matters

In a world with rapidly evolving threats — from cyber warfare to insurgency — special operations forces are often the first in and the last out. SOF Week gives these professionals a chance to meet face-to-face, share lessons learned, and check out the latest in defense tech and tactics.

But it’s not just for insiders. Tampa locals and visitors alike get to experience parts of the event too, especially the jaw-dropping "Battle in the Bay" demonstration, a live-action military showcase involving helicopters, watercraft, explosives, and tactical teams — right outside in Tampa’s downtown waterfront.

What You’ll See

  • Tech & Innovation Expo – Hundreds of exhibitors from around the world show off everything from next-gen night vision to autonomous drones.

  • Keynote Sessions – Top military and civilian leaders share insights on strategy, policy, and the future of special operations.

  • Career Development – Active duty and veteran SOF personnel have access to workshops, mentorship events, and career networking.

  • Community Outreach – Programs like GSOF Gives Back highlight the importance of supporting the people behind the uniform, including families and veterans.

  • USSOCOM Awards Ceremony – Honoring those who’ve gone above and beyond in service to their country and the SOF community.

Tampa’s Role

Why Tampa? The city is home to MacDill Air Force Base, the headquarters of USSOCOM. It’s a natural fit. But beyond the military connection, Tampa offers a warm welcome, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and attractions nearby. The city has embraced SOF Week, which now brings a major economic and cultural boost each year.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re in uniform, working in the defense sector, or just a curious civilian, SOF Week is a chance to see the future of global security up close. It’s a powerful reminder of the people, partnerships, and technologies working together behind the scenes to keep the world safe.
